#1: EVERY MORNING, DECIDE TO RUN THE DAY
“Either you run the day or the day runs you.” — Jim Rohn
Your morning sets the tone for the rest of your day, that’s why you need to control your mornings. On the other side, a bad start to your day can totally destroy your day.
Here is a couple of reasons why mornings are so great.
- Focus. Waking up early allows you to plan and set goals for the day. Goals that will enable you to make progress towards your dreams. A morning routine helps you enter the day with a focused mindset and eager to do the things that will bring you closer to your goals.
- Your time. In a busy world, you need to intentionally set time for yourself. Schedule this time in the morning. Many successful people spend the first hours of each day alone. Dwayne Johnson, Mark Wahlberg, Jennifer Aniston and so many more.
My morning routine looks like this.
- No mobile.
- Focus on gratefulness
- Purpose statement
- Prayer
- Intellectual time. Learn something.
- Plan the day.
I go more in detail about my morning routine in this answer. If you don’t have a morning routine yet, use my personal routine for inspiration.
#2: STOP COMPLAINING ABOUT HOW HARD SHIT IS, AND JUST DO IT
If you are serious about developing self-discipline you need to STOP COMPLAINING. When you complain, you put your focus on the things that are not good in your life. You focus on the things that are hard. This will lead to unhappiness and depression in the long term perspective.
Let me tell you something. Developing self-discipline is not easy. It’s hard. Difficult. Mentally tough. Complaining about how hard and tough something is will never be helpful, instead, it will drag you down.
Instead, you should put your focus on how blessed you are. Focus on the things you look forward to each day. There is ALWAYS something to be grateful for!
In everything give thanks (1 Thessalonians 5, 18)
There is always something to be grateful for. If you can’t think of something, think of a time where life sucked. Personally, I use my experiences of physical pain from when I served up north in the Norwegian army. Today, I constantly remind myself to be grateful for having a warm bed, warm clothes, the opportunity to stay inside and not walking on patrol in -30 degrees.
Just write 3 things you’re grateful for, like gum, spoons and your life. Think about how awesome they are and how lucky you are to have them.
Incorporate thankfulness into your morning routine, this will surely set the tone for your day and help you set a positive mindset. If you don’t have a morning routine yet, use my personal routine for inspiration.
#3: Challenge Yourself.
Face your fears. Make sure that you are doing one thing that challenges you, EVERY DAY! Real growth comes from pushing your limits. Imagine if you are pushing your limit every day. You will fuc*ing conquer.
You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, 'I lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.' - Eleanor Roosevelt.
#4: FAKE IT UNTIL YOU MAKE IT
"Men acquire a particular quality by constantly acting a certain way”. - Aristotle
By imitating confidence, competence, and an optimistic mindset, a person can realize those qualities in their real life.
This idea is based on that if you behave like the person you want to become, you’ll become like this in reality. Behaving like the person you want to become is about changing the way you feel and the way you think.
Researchers have found that “acting” a certain way allows your brain to “rehearse” a new way of thinking and can set off the desired chain of events in the future.
