CREATE EXTRAORDINARY EXPERIENCES
We all carry out some sort of mental script/conversation as we go through a day. Think about it. You are either in the present, looking forward to the future, or thinking about something that has happened in the past.
In your mind, you may be the person that would love to visit a museum after work and do some exotic stuff, but when actually finish work, you may be tired, and the couch looks more attractive to you than leaving for the museum. We often choose the comfier and less stressful route.
Think of yourself as three people.
- The remembering self - The storyteller.
- The experiencing self - Knows only the present moment.
- The anticipating self - Your future self.
When we give in too much to the present, the experiencing self, and don’t think about what the anticipating self would want to do or the remembering person would like to have done, we start to miss stuff.
Life goes on, boring as hell.
Whenever you are listening to the current, present, experiencing self, remind yourself that you are just listening to one actor, to one part of yourself. Try to remember the other selves!
Think of like putting a treasure in a chest for your future self to look back on. What kind of experiences can you put in that chest for the 80-year-old you’re to look back on?
Schedule your day according to what will make you happy looking back — and not according to what feels good in the moment.
