- STUDY WITH SOMEONE HOT
It becomes a lot easier to do something you don’t want to do when you’re doing it with someone who’s easy to spend time with. I’ve seen so many of my friends get into relationships with incredible women/men by simply starting a study group with them. It’s a low risk date. You spend lots of time together and if the feeling is mutual maybe you guys can do more than just study. - REFRAME “STUDYING”
Studying is word that has a lot of negative connotations. I think it’s because we rarely study something because we find it intrinsically interesting. Rather we tend to study to prove we know about the subject to someone else. All of this makes your motivation external rather than internal. That’s why I think it’s better to say “I’m about to learn” or “do some reading on a subject” both of those activities sound like they are intrinsically valuable and how you frame things to yourself is a key component of motivation. - LADDER YOURSELF
Instead of telling yourself that you are about to do 12 hours of reading, start with smaller increments of time.
“I’m going to go to the library and open my book”
“Then take out my notes”
“Open my notes and stare at them without reading for a couple minutes”
“Read only the first page of my notes”
“Write questions I have about that page”
etc.
By creating a ladder filled with many sub goals. You create an internal winner effect and get the feeling of accomplishment that can help motivate you to do more. - SMALLER INCREMENTS
This is similar to the ladder. Start with 5–10 minute chunks of studying to get your mind used to focusing. Then after you get in a flow where 10 minutes is easy. Extend to 15 min and then 20 min. This will allow you to build a relationship with your work and slowly get yourself in the head space to enter a deep work session. - LEARN SURROUNDING FACTS
It’s always easier to learn a subject when that subject is relevant to you. The easiest way to make a subject more relevant to you is learn ancillary facts. Things that are interesting but aren’t covered by your professor/teacher. Spend 5 to 10 minutes looking up cool facts about the subject to spark an interest in the subject you are about to study.
